The “Gay” Issue Part 1
The problem is not that "Gay's" should be able to marry and have equal marriage rights with straight couples; the problem is, as you incidentally pointed out, is with the institution of marriage.
I believe that married couples should have the same rights as single individuals. There should be no tax incentives or any other public institutional favoritism for married couples over single individuals. I would even go as far to say, why not eliminate the institution of marriage all together (at least in terms of legal existence). I think if a man (or woman) would like to have as many female (or male) partners as he wants (or can) he should. Does he need to wait for the government or a public institution (such as marriage) to "OK" who he wishes to have sex with and how he (or she) maintains those relationships? That would eliminate any argument of inequality voiced by any group.

The “Gay” Issue Part 2
As for as marriage as a religious ritual: I think any organized official religion should be able to perform any ceremony they choose. Meaning: Isn’t that what marriage actually is,
a religious ceremony? What business is it of the government to decide how one validates their own life’s choices before their idea of god through their chosen religious institution? [e.g. If Catholics’ want not to perform marriage ceremonies with homosexuals, then they shouldn’t. If Episcopalians’ want to perform marriage ceremonies with homosexuals, then they should. If Mormons’ want to have multiple wives they should (and do).] What right does the government have to interfere with any religious ceremony (within reason)?
